Starting in 1050 already, beer has been brewed at the heart of Bavaria near the myth-enshrouded Danube Gorges. This is the place where the Weltenburg Monastery was founded by Irish-Scottish monks in 600 CE, thus making it Bavaria's oldest monastic settlement. Around 800 CE, the abbey adopted the orders of Saint Benedict. Today, there are still seven monks of the Benedictine Order who live in the monastery and who still produce beer keeping strictly to the regulations of the Bavarian Purity Law of 1561. Their production, which is supervised by an experieenced brew master, comprises twelve traditional types of beer and a selection of some seasonal varieties. Weltenburg beers still symbolize very specific and energizing moments of pleasure.
The brewery's unique location at the Danube Gorges, its close proximity to hop and barley farming outside the walls of Weltenburg and the brew water coming from the Jura mountain rocks are only some indicators why these beers are so unique and why they have won so many awards already.
