De Halve Maan (The Half Moon), a Belgian brewery based in Bruges in West Flanders, are a sixth generation family business that started in 1856. In September 2016, the brewery attracted worldwide attention because of a unique building project: In order to improve their life cycle assessment, De Halve Maan brought a double beer pipeline into service that connected the brewery in Walplein to the bottling station in Waggelwater. The beer styles “Brugse Zot” and “Straffe Hendrik” are transported across town through a 3.2 km long pipeline that runs 34 meters below the surface at its deepest point. The pipeline, with a capacity of about five million liters of beer per year, is in service to avoid having to send trucks through the narrow, cobbled streets of Bruges.
